Should I use the Calendar integration or the legacy Google Calendar integration?

It’s not currently possible to use the Calendar integration and the legacy Google Calendar integration at the same time. This is due to a limitation that causes duplicate events to be created in Todoist, if both integrations are enabled in the same account at the same time.

This article will explain the difference between the two integrations, as well as help you decide which integration best fits your needs.

What’s the difference between the Calendar integration and the legacy Google Calendar integration?

The legacy Google Calendar integration allows you to sync scheduled tasks as events to Google Calendar, as well as sync any events from that calendar as tasks in Todoist, thereby creating a 2-way sync.

The Calendar integration allows you to see your events in Todoist, without having to transform them into tasks. It does not currently support syncing tasks as events to your calendar, but we’re working on implementing this in the future. This integration will also eventually support multiple calendar accounts, as well as integrating with more calendar providers, such as Outlook.

Should I use the Calendar integration or the legacy Google Calendar integration?

If you are not sure which integration you would like to use at this stage, here are a few pointers that may help you:

  • If you only need to see events in Todoist: we highly recommend using the new Calendar integration.
  • If you need to see your scheduled tasks as events in Google Calendar and a way to reschedule your tasks with Google Calendar: we recommend that you continue using the legacy Google Calendar integration for now.
  • If you need to see your scheduled tasks in your calendar, but you don’t need to be able to edit or reschedule them: we recommend that you subscribe to the Todoist calendar feed, as well as use the Calendar integration.

How will I know if I have the Google Calendar integration enabled in my account?

You can check this in your account's settings:

  1. Click your avatar in the top-left corner of Todoist.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open the Integrations tab.

What’s the plan for the Calendar integration?

We’re currently investing resources into improving Todoist’s ability to integrate with calendar providers.

Our goal is to make the Calendar integration more stable than the legacy Google Calendar integration, which is why we recommend using this integration when possible. The plan is for this integration to offer two options:

  • Ability to see calendar events in Todoist: You can see calendar events in Todoist, as actual events separated from tasks, including in the Week calendar layout.
  • Sync Todoist tasks as events to Google Calendar (In development): We’re working on a more stable way to sync tasks from Todoist to Google Calendar. This will include a 2-way sync, which will allow you to reschedule your Todoist tasks from within Google Calendar.

Note

The Calendar integration was built in a way that would allow us to integrate with several different calendar providers. It currently only supports Google Calendar, but we are also planning to add support for other calendar providers in the future, such as Outlook and iCloud Calendar.

What’s the plan for the legacy Google Calendar integration?

Since 2016, the legacy Google Calendar integration has allowed a two-way sync between Todoist and Google Calendar. This has proved to be a popular integration, but also one with many issues and limited scope for further development.

We have therefore decided to invest our efforts into developing the new Calendar integration. We will continue to maintain the legacy Google Calendar integration, which means that you can continue to use it for now. We may retire it in the future, but it won’t happen anytime soon and we will make sure to give you a proper heads-up before doing so.
